The Doe Run Company has supported NorthStar Battery Company by providing the bulk of the company’s lead metal needs since its manufacturing facility began formal operations in 2001.

The Springfield, Mo.-based company produces industrial batteries that serve as primary or strategic backup power sources, often in places where there is no infrastructure for electricity. The batteries also power many types of telecommunications equipment, including cell phone towers, ground satellite receivers and telecommunications terminals.

“Our batteries provide communication opportunities to the most remote parts of the world,” said Tim Collins, plant manager. “It’s pretty exciting that NorthStar and Doe Run are contributing to such an important, life-altering event globally and doing it right here in Missouri where the very best lead metal is produced.”

To meet increasing demand, the NorthStar facility has undergone two expansions and has been operating at full capacity. NorthStar currently produces thousands of batteries every day, and that number is expected to increase.

NorthStar is building a second plant in Springfield. The new facility will provide new employment opportunities. Doe Run will continue to play an important role, supplying NorthStar with much of the lead necessary to manufacture the increased production.

Last year, NorthStar reversed the customer-supplier role with Doe Run, contributing a customized storage battery to Doe Run’s Minerals Education program. The battery features a clear plastic case to help students better understand how power is stored and placed on standby to provide emergency backup power.

“Partnering with Doe Run to support science educators was a perfect fit,” Collins said. “Kids get excited when they realize how important galena, our Missouri state mineral and the main ore of lead, is to the entire world.”
